It is of paramount importance to the Irish Society for Autism, where and how the education of children with Autism is carried out.
Therefore, depending on the needs of the individual child, the Irish Society for Autism holds that there are various locations where the education of children with Autism can be carried out, provided that a proper environment that caters for the specific needs of the child with Autism is present.
1. Special schools whose environment is only for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
2. Special classes within the mainstream school system.
3. Normal classes in the mainstream school system supported as necessary by visiting specialist teachers.
Whichever of the above option is chosen, it is the opinion of the Irish
Society for Autism that the education and training of the child with Autism
should take place in an environment free from anxiety and stress where the
individuality and specific needs of each child is of paramount importance.
Education should embrace all aspects of a persons development - physical, intellectual, social and emotional. To meet these needs it is essential to have an individualised education programme for each person which will be developed and expanded as progress is made. Parents should also be encouraged to take an active role in all aspects of their child's development.
